Your 17-month-old: milestones and what to expect
Seventeen months is the month before the 18-month checklist, a good time to simply notice what your child already does: points to show you things, hands you a toy when you ask with words and a gesture, tries a new word. You do not need to test them.
Checked against CDC, AAP and NHS guidance · how we fact-check
Most toddlers do these by 15 months (CDC)
Social & emotional: Copies other children while playing · shows you an object they like · claps when excited · hugs a stuffed doll or other toy · shows you affection.
Language & communication: Tries to say one or two words besides "mama" or "dada" · looks at a familiar object when you name it · follows directions given with both a gesture and words · points to ask for something or to get help.
Movement & thinking: Tries to use things the right way, like a phone, cup, or book · stacks at least two small objects · takes a few steps on their own · uses fingers to feed themselves some food.
The next official CDC checklist is at 18 months, between checklists, children work on these same skills at their own pace.
What you might notice
No more fussier stretches were described in the research after week 62. Many toddlers this age walk away to explore but keep checking that you are close by. That is an 18-month milestone, not clinginess to fix. Some days can still feel harder, and timing varies a lot between children.
What can help this month
Let your child "help" with simple chores, look at a few book pages together, and offer a spoon and a cup without a lid, even if it gets messy. Short, simple directions work best ("Give me the ball"). Expect a lot of spilling while they practice.
And you: Messy meals and slow mornings are part of this stretch. You can lower the bar for the day and still be doing a great job.
Talk with your pediatrician if…
Your baby is missing one or more of the milestones above by 18 months, or has lost skills they once had. That is the CDC's own advice: don't wait, talk with the doctor and ask about developmental screening. And if you're simply worried, that's reason enough to call.
Coming up: after this window comes "almost two" (weeks 78 to 104). No deadlines, windows.
