Your 12-month-old baby: milestones and what to expect

Twelve months. The CDC 12-month checklist is gentler than the culture around it: walking and talking are not first-birthday requirements. A whole small human, one year old — and clingier near the birthday, which is a milestone in disguise.

Checked against CDC, NHS and AAP guidance · how we fact-check

Most babies do these by 12 months (CDC)

What most babies this age can do

Social & emotional: Plays games with you like pat-a-cake · waves "bye-bye".

Language & communication: Calls a parent "mama", "dada", or another special name · understands "no".

Movement & thinking: Puts something in a container · looks for things they see you hide · pulls up to stand · walks holding on to furniture · drinks from a cup you hold · picks things up between thumb and pointer finger.

What you might notice

Fussy clusters were described around weeks 44 and 52, right as huge motor projects (standing! cruising!) take over. Many parents report clingier stretches near the first birthday. Games, waves, and first special words make up for everything.

What can help this month

Expect more falls and frustration as your baby pushes toward walking: narrate what you see instead of over-praising or stepping in constantly, so they build confidence trying things themselves. Keep the bedtime routine steady even if clinginess spikes around the birthday. And take a moment for yourself too: you got a whole small human through their first year.

And you: You got a whole small human through year one. When the clinginess flares near the birthday, it is a milestone in disguise, not a setback. Be as kind to yourself as you are to them.

Talk with your pediatrician if…

Talk with your doctor

Your baby is missing one or more of the milestones above by 12 months, or has lost skills they once had. That is the CDC's own advice: don't wait, talk with the doctor and ask about developmental screening. And if you're simply worried, that's reason enough to call.
