The Wonder Weeks, fact-checked: what the science actually says

What The Wonder Weeks claims
The Wonder Weeks is a book (and now an app) by Hetty van de Rijt and Frans Plooij, two Dutch researchers. Its core claim: in the first 20 months, babies go through 10 predictable developmental jumps, which the book calls “leaps”. Each one is said to arrive at a specific week counted from the due date, and each is preceded by a fussy period: more crying, more clinging, worse sleep.
Two parts of that claim need separating. The first part, that babies have harder stretches followed by visible new skills, matches what many parents see and what broader infant research describes. The second part, that these stretches land on a fixed week-by-week schedule for every baby, is where the evidence gets thin.
Where the idea comes from
The claim is built on a study the authors published in 1992. They followed 15 mother-baby pairs at home in the Netherlands during the first year, and described periods of increased crying, clinginess and disturbed sleep clustering around certain weeks: 5, 8, 12, 17, 26, 30, 36, 44 and 52 (van de Rijt-Plooij and Plooij, Journal of Reproductive and Infant Psychology, 1992).
It was careful, detailed work. It was also 15 babies. That is a starting point for a theory, not proof of a universal calendar.
What happened when other researchers checked
Two independent checks matter here.
A Spanish team followed 18 infants and found something in the middle: they did observe regression-like periods in the first year, but the pattern was not identical to the original schedule (Sadurni and Rostan, 2002). Partial support, with different timing.
The stronger test came earlier, from the same university where the theory was born. A doctoral study followed babies week by week, measuring behaviour and stress hormones, specifically to see whether the predicted difficult periods showed up on schedule. They did not. The researchers found large differences between babies and from one week to the next, and concluded the strict timing was not supported (de Weerth and van Geert, British Journal of Developmental Psychology, 1998). The disagreement over these results became a real academic dispute, which tells you the stakes were taken seriously on both sides.
Worth saying plainly: every study in this story is small. Fifteen babies, eighteen babies, a handful more. Infant-observation research is slow and expensive, so small samples are normal for the field. But it means nobody should talk about the first year in certainties, including us.
So are fussy phases real?
Yes, in the way that matters to you. Crying normally builds and peaks in the first weeks of life. Sleep gets choppy around big motor projects like rolling and standing. Separation anxiety arrives late in the first year, and it is an official CDC milestone, not a setback. Hard stretches are part of typical development, and they pass.
What the evidence does not support is a promise that your baby’s hard week will start on a named calendar day. If your baby hits a rough patch at week 19 instead of week 17, nothing is wrong with your baby. The schedule was never that solid to begin with.
That distinction changes how you use any fussy-phase tool, including ours: as a weather forecast, not a train timetable. Rain is likely around these windows. It is not guaranteed on Tuesday.
What this means at 3 a.m.
When a hard stretch lands, the useful questions are not “which leap is this” but the boring, checkable ones. Is the baby fed, dry, warm, unhurt and afebrile? Has anything changed today? Am I okay to keep going, or do I need to put the baby down safely and take five minutes?
Then zoom out to the only checkpoints that carry medical weight: the CDC milestone checklists, which describe what most babies (at least 75%) do by 2, 4, 6, 9 and 12 months. A fussy week means little. Missing milestones at a checkpoint age, or losing skills once gained, means it is time to talk to your doctor. That rule comes from the CDC itself, and it works no matter which developmental theory turns out to be right.
If your baby was born early
One thing the original researchers got clearly right: they counted from the due date, not the birth date. Development runs on the due-date clock. If your baby arrived early, any timeline, theirs or ours, should use adjusted age, which is exactly how pediatricians assess premature babies until around age 2.
